And how can it help?
Sports chiropractic refers to a speciality of chiropractic that focus on optimal performance and training of the athlete. Treatments often include soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, and specialized exercise prescription to restore strength, stability, and range of motion.
Who qualifies?
The official accrediting body is FICS: the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic. After graduating from an accredited chiropractic degree program, a graduate can go on to specialize in sports medicine through continuing education seminars and an exam. Additionally, if the graduate has a Masters degree in Sports Medicine, they may be elligible to sit for the exam right after their practicum. After passing their exam, they become a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) and can go on to have it converted to an Internationally Certified Sports Chiropractor (ISCS) through FICS. Only chiropractors who have this certification are elligible to call themselves and Internationally Certified Sports Chiropractor.
Through movement and injury assessment, joint mobilization, and restoration of balance between muscles and joints, chiropractic is the ultimate training and performance tool. Care often takes place on the sideline, in the training room, or in the office.
What's it like?
Being a sports chiropractor has taken me (quite literally) all over the world with events such as World Championship Kickboxing, World Championship Fistball, and the CSIT World Sport Games. The experience has been very humbling and very rewarding, giving me the opportunity to practice in over 11 countries with countless athletes. While I strive to deliver the highest quality care in the field, I am also available to travel with athletes and teams by arrangement.
